How to host a hackathon

A hackathon is a logistics event wearing a coding costume: food, power strips, WiFi capacity, and a judging pipeline matter more than the prompt. Teams forgive a vague theme; they never forgive a broken demo queue at 2 AM.

What format should you pick?

  • One-day (8–10 hours) — the honest default for community events; no sleeping logistics, working demos by evening.
  • Weekend (24–48h) — only with a venue that permits overnight stay, security, and a real budget. Twice the logistics, not twice the output.
  • Online — a week-long build window with a live demo day widens the pool beyond one city; virtual event pages handle the kickoff and demos.
  • Theme tight, stack open — “build for local commerce” beats “innovation”; prescribing the tech stack kills the fun.

How does judging stay fair?

Publish criteria before the event — working demo (40%), idea (25%), execution (25%), presentation (10%) is a defensible split. Three-minute demos, hard-timed, judges score independently before conferring. Announce top three only; ranked lists past third place generate grievance, not motivation.

How do hackers find hackathons?

“Hackathon [city] 2026”, “student hackathon near me”, “AI hackathon registration” — plus college groups and dev communities re-sharing the registration link. The registration page needs: date, theme, team size, what’s provided (food, WiFi, swag), prizes, and code of conduct. Approval-required registration filters ghost teams; the waitlist backfills — hackathons overbook worse than airlines. Free registration page setup. Campus-heavy cities: Boston, Indore, Chandigarh.

Sponsors without selling the soul

Sponsors buy recruiting access and API adoption — price tiers accordingly: logo tier, prize tier (they fund a category), API tier (a prize for best use of their tool). Keep judging independent of sponsorship or the community notices immediately.
