How to promote an event (without an ad budget)

Promotion channels are not equal. Ranked below by conversion, not by how scalable they feel. Small events fill from the top of this list; skip to the bottom and you get views, not attendees.

1. Personal invites — highest conversion, lowest scale

A direct message from the host converts at many times the rate of any broadcast. Budget one hour: DM 20–30 people individually with one personal sentence and the event link. For a 50-person event, this single hour often does half the work.

2. Communities where your audience already gathers

  • Relevant Discord/Slack groups, subreddits, WhatsApp groups — post once, with context, following each community’s rules.
  • Ask one respected member to share it instead of posting cold. Borrowed trust beats reach.
  • Cross-promote with adjacent event hosts: you announce theirs, they announce yours.

3. Your own channels

  • One announcement post + one reminder post per network. More than that erodes goodwill.
  • Email or SMS blast to past attendees — the highest-value list you own. Every event should grow it.
  • Put the link in your bio for the two weeks before the event.

4. The event page itself

Public events on Espeya surface in city and category feeds, so people browsing “what’s on this weekend” can find you without following you. Make the page carry its weight: a clear title with the topic in it, a real description, and a cover image that survives a small phone screen.

5. Timing that works

  • 2–3 weeks out: announce. Earlier and people forget; later and calendars are full.
  • 1 week out: second push + personal invites to fill remaining spots.
  • 24 hours out: reminder blast to RSVPs (automatic on Espeya) — this is attendance insurance, not promotion.

What to skip at small scale

  • Paid ads — event ads need volume and retargeting to pay off; below a few hundred tickets they rarely do.
  • Press releases — journalists cover stories, not calendar items.
  • Posting the same link daily — algorithms bury it and followers mute you.
